Waldorf Salad
Waldorf
New York's Finest
This sweet and savory salad was first served around 1893 at the landmark Waldorf Hotel in New York City. The hotel's maitre d, Oscar Michel Tschirky, is credited with first publishing the recipe. Even though Tschirky is credited with its creation, the real chef is unknown. There is one theory that it actually originated in the Waldorf Lunch System, a chain of lunchrooms in the early 20th century.

Enjoy a traditional Waldorf Salad with apples, celery, mayonnaise and nuts. Use lettuce as a garnish layer underneath, rather than as a main ingredient. Adding nuts and raisins are a modern innovation in cookbook recipes.
